Okay I'm going to start building up the AE86... I was planning on going SR20DET as a swap, however I'm thinking now (because of info Ryan passed on to me) possibly CA18DET, yes it is a cut in displacement, However I can find MOST parts for this engine at a local checker/autozone/pepboys because it is also found in the Nissan Pulsar and 180sx in it's N/A version here in the states. :) Here is some info on these little beauties:

They are also quite a bit cheaper and they have a... IRON BLOCK! For maximum strength!
Also I'll be adding a fuel cell because the tank and lines are bad in the corolla, and I'd rather just run new. Suspention and wheels and tires would be coming after I get the bugger running. Most of this stuff I can get cheap and almost wash the cost because of the demand for AE86 parts out there as I pull the old stuff off.
I am going to treat this as a "club car" so if you help work on it/find parts for it, then you get to abuse it with me. :P
I think that a 9and3 drift car is called for. 8)

I am definately willing to help :)
And I'm excited to see a nice RWD car with little weight and decent power... :)

heres a little local opinion.....

i think the biggest things pointed out about the ca are: they are old and its hard to find decent ones, headgaskets are bad, more difficult to work on, you will spend close to sr money to make power with ca.
so, i would say do it if you know you can find a decent one for cheap, will have to change headgasket and dont want much more than stock power.

Why not a 3sgte, its a toyota and the 3s is just as capable as the sr20, plus the mr2 one is pre-set of for rwd. Just another option.

3SGTE is a wicked motor, ask Ben, he is about to have 2 or 3.
Main problem areas:
MR2 is Midship, rear wheel drive... So like a fwd in reverse.
Alltrac/GT4 is FWD based AWD
So, 3SGTEs require custom turbo manifold, custom DP, possibly some custom bracketry for the accessories, and intake manifold may pose a problem too.
So, there isnt an application that comes easy to adapt to RWD, and then you have to find a transmission.
The Altezza (IS series) came with a VVT-i 3SGE, so you would be ok to turbo that particular motor as it is ready to go for RWD, or use the tranny for a 3SGTE. It would still be costly.
I would love to see it though.
There was an 86 at American Touge 2 with a custom 3SGE swap that was supa-boosted... It was hot...

3, but one of them will be (for the time being anyway) nonfunctional.
A couple people have installed the 3S-GTE in Corollas, apparently it's possible with a little monkeying with motor mounts and swapping bell housings. The engine has a lot of potential for the price, that's for sure, and Toyotas seem to love Toyota parts (case in point: my brand new non-toyota alternator lasting a week and a half before it died).
I don't really know what prices are for building up other engines, mainly because I've never had the inclination to research them, but I'm looking at around $400 for a decent (not insane) valvetrain, $260 for ARP fasteners if I go that route, and (again if I decide to go that route) $750ish for cheapest decent pistons/rods, and around $400 or so in OEM bits that should be replaced (water pump, oil pump, timing belt + tensioners, shimless buckets, etc.)
Again, dunno what it costs to build up other engines, but that'd give you kind of an idea. I'm all for having another 3S powered car in the club :D

I'm always willing to sell for the right price. And that price might have been met. So the AE86 Build up might be kaput. :D
