ordered my front shocks (KYB AGX) and Whiteline swaybar, figured I could knock those out while doing CV boots and bearings. Anyone done CV boots before? how hard is it?
Swaybar should be a ton of fun... have to remove the front propeller shaft from the transmission, and the exhaust too. fun!
I've never done an actual cvboot job. When the boots on my nissan were looking weak, I just replaced the entire axle with a remanufactured unit.
It was like $50-80 per axle. The boot kit was like $25.
Wheel bearings...never done them and I don't wanna. I sold my neon cuz i was affraid of the wheel bearings going out. I know the current owner, and the bearings are good but the AC compressor crapped out and the Head blew a plug badly.

hmmm... that's actually not a bad option. the boot kits are like $25, and the axle (if I can trust autozone's parts selector anyway) is $70, so that'd probably be a much better idea :) thanks!
I've done bearings once, and it's a right pain in the ass.. take the steering knuckle off, bring it to a machine shop, have them press the old ones out, press the new ones in, then bring it back and install it again. woo hoo :P anybody know any good/cheap machine shops?

that sounds like fun stuff i dont want to do!! theres a reason all-tracs are rare! have to take half the car apart to do anything! you'll see such an improvement with that suspension!!! especially on those 80mph corner carving runs :P

they're only rare 'cos everyone's too much of a pussy to take their entire car apart just to replace a hose once in a while :P
sooo.. yeah, they could've probably made it a bit more friendly to work on. goddamn quirky cars. Looking forward to the new suspension though. If I submit enough sacrifices to the shipping gods, I should get my stuff sometime this weekend or early next week, so next weekend is gonna be a blast. If you enjoy lots of bitching and moaning and cursing and throwing tools anyway.
I love my AllTrac :)

you would have to drain the trans (duhhh) slip the axle out of the knuckle and the pop it out of the trans, it should be held in by a cir-clip, rip off the bands and pull off the boot, clean everything and re-pack the joint, put on new boot and bands and repeat and repeat and.... make sure the cir-clips are on, oh and you will want to replace the axle seals (on trans) line up axle and tap with a hammer until the cir-clip seats then run it back thru the knuckle etc. It wasnt that bad but I suppose dropping in re-man axles would be a little easier

Thanks :) Doesn't sound *too* terrible, but I'm thinking a re-man would be a lot easier considering all the other crap I've gotta do at the same time. Plus then I'll have another halfshaft around in case I ever need it (from what I read, it's the same halfshaft on both sides in front).

I have replaced the front half-shafts on an 87 celica.
Not AWD, but close enough I think.
Yeah, it really isn't that bad but for the extra money it's almost worth getting the whole shaft. :)

most places want your old axles back so they can rebuild them, not sure what the core charges run

Blah, you're right. Was hoping the core wouldn't be too much and could just keep it, but I just checked, and at $45 I may as well just buy another remanufacured one if I end up needing it someday. Damn the man!
