theres a really good article in the latest SCC about this....for once, they actually took a scientific approach and paid a lab to do it. they tested the Nos off-road boost, um another off the shelf, and a home brew..as well as straight toulene. the Nos brought the 91 shell octane gas up to 93 and the other a little less. toulene about the same depending on how much was added. with 4 gallons of toulene(iirc) it brought it up to 95.5 octane.

I've used a few different boosters, and that Nos off-road one was the only one that ever made a noticeable difference! its also $10 for a can..you can get a 4 gal can of toulene for like $12. obviously the Nos is easier to carry around in the car. Nice to see a good test though, to prove it does work.

I tried the NOS energy drink. It didn't do shit.

well you didnt drink the "off-road" edition dummy! everyone knows the regular one doesnt work! maybe a mix of nos/redbull/monster??

I haven't had much luck with octane booster. Maybe I need more mods. +

no i was using the Nos one with my wrx stock last year to keep it from pinging..the Nos "off-road" version is the only one i would use

Considering for the same $10 I can get 4 gallons of 100 (4.99 - 2.49 = 2.50 x 4 = $10 difference). 4 gallons of 100 + 10 gallons of 91 = 93.5 octane. I'm not sure of the toulene thing. I think I need to just hook up the 109 again. 3 gallons of that stuff will get you 94.8 octane for about $5.25 a gallon.

yeah i still plan on getting a drum of 109. rich gave me some good figures for mixing.

I bought 2 cans of teh NOS racing booster. Hopefully it really does make a diff.

hopefully! it worked in mine, but i've always had an issue with pinging in the heat and it did stop it.

hopefully! it worked in mine, but i've always had an issue with pinging in the heat and it did stop it.I've been hearing the ol' marbles in da can lately myself. I wonder if our summer gas is shit just like cali's sometimes.

It's crazy how much better my car runs with a few gallons of the good stuff... it just wants to pull for days.

well some of our gas comes from cali so yeah its the same shit....6 gal 91, 6 gal 101 makes my car super happy and much stronger.

I know this might sound stupid but I have an MSD ignition box in my car, and during the summer I back the timing off a few degrees(currently 2 degrees retard) just to help with any possible pinging. Much cheaper than running 91 or higher octane, and you probably only lose a few hp.

Of course I am not running high-boost turbo setups like some of you seem to be running.

no, thats exactly what you should do! most of us wrx's are running ecu reflashes that allow timing retard but we are power snobs and we want it all year long! so i run the good stuff or octane boost. its more noticeable in turbo cars then n/a, but my spec v(before it was turbo'd) used to ping during the summer(had the knock sensor relocated), so i ran some octane boost in that too which helped somewhat.. but retarding is the safest bet.

Who really wants to get retarded anyway??
