View Full Version : Damn Brakes

Does anyone have any idea what would cause the brake pedal to sink to the floor (while the car's running anyway, they can be pumped up when it's off) other than a bad fluid leak or master cylinder? It wasn't always like this and I haven't had the car *that* long so I'm assuming it's not something like worn lines or anything. I've tried:

-Bleeding many times
-Flushing/replacing all brake fluid
-Replacing master cylinder (twice)
-Replacing bleeder screws (put teflon tape on the threads too)
-Checking pads (little over 50% wear on the fronts, a little less on the backs. would've replaced fronts anyway, but autozone gave me the wrong damn part, as usual)
-checking ECU and ABS systems for codes (both had nothin)

The fluid level's staying about the same, so I don't think it's a leak. Rotors don't look bad (no grooves or anything, or abnormal wear). The calipers are dual-piston and the pads are wearing at a slight angle, so one piston (I think the top one) is pushing a little harder than the other, but that shouldn't really affect anything, right?
I'm completely stuck on ideas, googled myself senseless and found nothing other than saying it's the master cylinder or air in the lines. I'd kinda like to be able to stop my car again :) any ideas?

Get the Midas touch...

I'd say check the master cylinders, but you've already done that. My lifted truck did the same thing because they didn't lengthen the brake lines when they did the lift, and the lines got messed up, no fluid leaked but the pedal would go to the floor and I'd have to pump to stop too. Check all the lines make sure they are in good shape, maby it's time to go to braided lines.

Other than that you can try bleeding them again.

LOL sad as it is, I was actually considering bringing it somewhere to have them look at it, even though I know they'll never have worked on an AllTrac before and would probably do a worse job than me :P I just need a good diagnosis.

The lines flex a little bit, but I don't think it's enough to cause *this* much of a difference unless it was leaking. The other thing is, sometimes they work almost alright (unless I make a hard left turn, related problem but not the core problem), and sometimes they hardly work at all. Braided lines are on the list, but I need to make sure I'm going to fix the problem before tossing more money into it :) stupid AllTracs..

and by bled many times, I mean a total of 5-6 times in the last month alone, including saturday evening. At this point I'm pretty sure it's not air in the lines, unless a *lot* is getting in from somewhere fluid can't get out of.

How exactly were your lines messed up?

no cracks in the hoses? power brakes? I had a booster leak internally on one of my cars, took for ever to find too!

I thought if there was a vaccuum leak in the booster it'd be harder to pump the brakes? the lines aren't great, but that's kind of expected with the age of the car. but I doubt they would cause this much of a problem, especially considering they were fine when I got the car. and yep, power brakes.

We looked at the booster and there doesn't seem to be a leak...

It's lame as hell...

wow, i really have no idea what else could be causing this!!? i would go with new lines but again, make sure that would solve the issue first....f alltracs!

Damn alltracs...
Thinking of calling up toyota and having them look at it, but I'm pretty sure they'll just tell me master cylinder :P

remanu'd calipers are $61/ea. at autozone (and this time there were pictures to make sure it's the right one). hmmmmm..

Yeah I was bout to say it might be the calipers... that is the only other thing I can think of.

yeah, that's what I was thinking.
Toyota wants like $45 to look at it, so I'm thinking I'll just let them do their thing and see what they think. Pretty sure they'll tell me it's the master brake cylinder though. lol

It's because it's a toyota ... HONDAs don't have these kinds of problems! J/K Take it to Just brakes or Midas to get the free inspection, then go fix it yourself.

lol just brakes is never touching my car again :P they told me my shocks were blown less than 24 hours after I put in new ones.. that doesn't instill the most confidence

Yeah, I'd say.
