07-12-2005, 01:20 PM
do you use their whole line of products? Seemed most folks raved about Klasse products for wax and polish, and then P21S for wheels......

wgnths
07-12-2005, 01:32 PM
yeah i switched to their whole lineup.....surge has the claybar etc that isnt listed as being available yet to the public. but we get the monkey hookup! im impressed with all their stuff so far. if you happen to want any of the stuff, go to surge and tell marion you with 9&3 so you get a deal. he has a nice package price for us. :)

mind PM'ing me what you paid? so I can set some cash aside. I need clay, microfiber cloths, wax, wheel clener, the whole shebang. I dont have a rotary, but want to polish too. :D

No mods yet, eh? So help our imagination with a list of what is soon coming in the order you plan on getting them :)

Ruiner77
07-12-2005, 01:59 PM
:p Well i gave a few up top.

First looking to get new tires... probably Zero Nero's but keep the stock wheels.

Then Perrin rear sway and endlinks. Followed by an undecided brand front sway.

I havent decided if i want to swap out springs or not, but if i do ill think id go with the STi Pinks so its nothing too dramatic.

I was then planning on grabbing an Acessport and going Stage 1 for a bit before diving into any exhaust, but seems like a few AZ folks are saying that Acessport is NOT good for us AZ drivers.... anybody have any feelings on this? I really need to be frugal, Im now supporting my wife and our new son, so I really dont have money to burn at this point.

If i do go exhaust, Ill grab an STi uppie and maybe a perrin dp. Not sure on muffler yet... im not a fan of loud mufflers one bit, but ill have to listen to a few first. :P

I think thats about it so far...... other things will come im sure. I was also wanting to swap out the stock audio, but i just dont want a single DIN head unit, and cant afford a $1200 touchscreen system. So we'll see..

... oh yea... and clearing the headlights LOL

1.never raced a day in my life
2.ITS AN AUTOMATIC :P

07-12-2005, 03:24 PM
dont let the auto keep you back! remember, theres still a turbo under the hood :) autox is more about fun than anything. as far as the monkey stuff, he has a package deal for $22 i think..i forget what is included. i've used the polish, by hand, and its really nice.
Your mod list looks great! keep the stock wheels, throw on some pinks, good tires, sway bars and rear strut bar! up/dp, exhaust(maybe the sti axleback like moxie, for the low budget). first power mod i would do is ecutek from dynocomp. you'll gain up to 25whp with just a reflash...i would stay away from accessport. off the shelf tunes dont work well in az. you need a custom tune to work with our extreme heat and crappy gas. check out the ebay up/dp combo..your whole setup can be done really cheap if we do a little digging. :D

Ruiner77
07-12-2005, 03:25 PM
What does Dyno charge for the flash out the door?

wgnths
07-12-2005, 07:40 PM
$595 without dyno tuning...we may have to talk to rich friday and see if he'll maybe setup a deal for club members for either the reflash or a discount on tuning.....

Ruiner77
07-12-2005, 07:47 PM
now thats just the price for the flash right? the Ecutek will be annother $900 or so right?

wgnths
07-12-2005, 07:56 PM
Ecutek is the flash. theres no physical hardware involved with ecutek..its simply the program used to tune the factory ecu. there is ecutek hardware that can be used to do your own tuning but i dont think its available at this time. so, $595 is the full price for ecutek. if you want custom tuning done on the dyno, thats additional. usually $160/hr, should only take an hour to hour and half to finish though..that will ensure you have a tune that is tailored for your car/mods if any, and you'll have peace of mind that its safe and backed by Dyno-Comp.

Ruiner77
07-12-2005, 08:01 PM
wow .. i thought there was hardware to buy too.... that aint bad at all!! Now i think i know the answer to this one, but once its flashed is it possible to go back to stock if ya gotta take it in for warranty work?

wgnths
07-12-2005, 09:08 PM
yes it is, simple to do.......the beauty of ecutek though, is that its non detectable by the dealership. so you wouldnt have to go back to stock. :D the stock ecu still retains its main functions, so a dealer scanning the ecu will not pick up anything different with the flash.

Ruiner77
07-13-2005, 06:02 AM
WHA WHA???? hows that? i thought they could check timings and all that at the dealership? wow if thats true, then hot damn! Would it be worth while getting that done even before i upgrade the exhaust? then having it done again further down the road when i do upgrade? Will i benefit from the flash even though im stock?

thanks for all the info by the way! ive been reading like mad on nasioc but aparently i was misreading it...

moxie
07-13-2005, 06:08 AM
I want to ask rich about the detectability thing.

People have said that 05 ecu makes it easier to tell.
which would suck, but I will ask for sure.

And a reflash on a stock car is a great mod.

wow yea that aint bad! not bad at all! If you get a chance to ask him about the 05's id REALLY apreciate it. I had read somwhere that the MY05's had the VIN encoded in there, and it would wipe it when flashed or something. And by that the dealership could tell. But then again, im obviously not that well informed LOL.

Yeah Rich is the man... and to "retune" it down the road when you add more stuff like an exhaust the reflash is $150 plus dyno time, alot better than paying for the license again.

Now annother Q..... does an aftermarket muffler really increase performance at all? I knwo the exhaust in general does, but is it that big of a deal to swap out the stock muffler for a louder one? Or is it just for sound and looks?

pickinicholas

It depends on how much power you are pushing... someone pushing 300+awhp will want bigger than stock exhaust. but the stock sized piping is good for what most people do. I personally upgraded to a 3" fully catless exhaust, but I'm going to be pushing alot of power. And there are bigger exhausts that are barely louder than stock (IE... Borla Hush twin tip)

07-13-2005, 11:09 AM
The only part of my exhaust I've changed so far is the axelback section for the Prodrive one, haven't dyno'd so no proof but it did feel better to me, it's definitly less restrictive than the stock muffler, the piping is bigger(2.5") and the muffler is a "free-flow" design, not much louder than stock, I'm actually hoping it gets a little louder when the rest of the exhaust gets done. The Magnaflow Bryan has on his wrx is nice too, a little louder than the Prodrive but not too loud, they both have a nice deep rumble :D

07-13-2005, 11:18 AM
yeah the 05 ecu may be different.....reflash on stock is well worth it. if you simply add an axleback later on, theres no need to reflash again as the gain wont be that big. any turbo car benefits from less restriction though with the air coming in and air going out. bphillips flashed his stock, ask him what he thought!

Bphilly
07-13-2005, 11:22 AM
I have an 05 with reflash. I haven't really had any major problems that the dealer would need to look at...but I doubt that whole vin/ecu thing.
It sounds like a rumor that 04 owners like Erin made up to make themselves feel better about the lack of painted sideskirts on the 04.

Bphilly
07-13-2005, 11:22 AM

Ok.... annother question...

can any of you tell me about what i should expect to pay for an STi uppie (used obviously), and a perrin rear sway (prefer new). I was hoping to get the perrin endlinks as well..... but have any of you had bad experiance with them? i heard some folks talking about bumping and squeeking from them... is this correct, or did someone just install them wrong? Im still trying to sort out my cash and what to do when.... I had sent a PM to the guys at Kingpin but never got a reply. Ill call em if i have to, but hate to call and ask pricing if im not going to buy right away.

thanks guys!

wgnths
08-10-2005, 09:27 AM
dont bother with kingpin..........seriously, they wont call you back. if you want perrin, go to surge and marion will hook you up. i have no idea what used sti up or dp's go for. i have the perrin rear sway with endlinks and its very very noisy. i've tried reinstalling it, grease and it still makes lots of noise. from what i've read, so does everyone elses. also, i wouldnt do an up or dp unless you have plans to do the reflash in the very near future because wrx's run real lean and can be dangerous. if you want a little extra hp without reflash, then do a k&n drop in filter and exhaust...or the rear sti exh like moxie has.

I haven't had problems with my perrin rear sway, but it's also a '05 STI one. I had a whiteline on it before the drivetrain swap, I LOVED that sway, and they are cheaper than Perrin new.

Ill have to hear his exhaust first... my wife and i were curious what yours was going to sound like and listend carefully when you pulled away.. i love the idle sound on yours but didnt care for the tone and loudness of it once you gave it gas. We are both a bit nuts about the sound of exhaust.

as for reflash, yes if i do any up/dp work ill be flashing at the same time.

and i didnt know surge did actual parts... i thought they were a suplies place.. helmets, shoes, cleaning, etc. but now that i know :D

The rear sway sounds frusterating. Do you have any suggestions on lowering that sound then? i mean i read that the noise is mostlyt from the endlinks and that other manufacturers endlinks ar silent and will work fine with the perrin bar... is this true?

nick... why did you like that bar so much? what made it better?

It was a VERY stout bar that did exactly what it was asked to do without making noise and was adjustible to be more stiff or loosen up a little. I would have bought one of those for my current setup, but they weren't out at the time I needed it.

My exhaust sounds pretty good.
The STi muffler is a little louder and deeper.

Sadly you probably won't get to hear it.
I am putting on a 3" this evening.

The STI muffler does make a happy noise, especially with no cats.

If anything you can try it out...
I would sell you the exhaust pretty cheap.

yeah if you dont want loud, then his setup is the way to go. wrx's are very loud once you add exhaust, up/dp. theres the borla hush exh that keeps things quieter, but the boxer motor is just loud. and me, i like loud :D

Ruiner77
08-10-2005, 12:11 PM
yea... ya know... loud i can deal with if i have to, but its the tone more so. Ive heard the hush from a vid someone posted... real deep.. but at WOT its crazy loud.. :P thats fine by me if the gains are worht it. but i think what i didnt care for about yours was the sortof gurgle it seemed to have, and the note was a bit too high for my tastes. but exhausts are always a personal preference when it comes to sound.

Well my uppie has been purchased
my DP is purchased
my gasket set is purchased
my radiator shroud is purchesed
my radiator cap is purchased
my thermostat is purchased
my windows are dark
my lights are clear
my clearbra is on
my tires are purchased and mounted

Most of my Ebay items sold today leaving me with over $400 cash. So its about time to buy my accessport and start planning the install.

what are the chances i can get some help with an install day before the next autocross? :P

WOO HOO!

moxie

There is a small chance :)

But this weekend is already toast...
So its a little up in the air :(

Ruiner77
11-21-2005, 02:02 PM
Yea this weekend is a bit full.. i hear ya. Thats why i say its a small chance.

Now im fairly sure i can do the installs on the cap (lol), shroud, and thermostat myself. The only ones im concerned about are the UP/DP. Now i was looking into the DP install, and it didnt seem too bad. A lot of hidden bolts but that looked to be the hardest part. I dont even want to try the uppie due to how deep it seems to be. Are there any real concerns with putting in the DP before i do the uppie/flash, and doing it myself? Ive got a jack and 4 stands, so i can put it up :P. but id rather not botch it up.

wgnths
11-21-2005, 02:05 PM
you can drive the car with dp and no up or tune, without an issue. the only difficult thing you have is up. i have zero time this weekend, and next is shot too with sat and meet on sun.

The possible problems with delaying the UP install:

- Down pipe has to come off again, sounds its a slight duplication of effort.

- Running with all those mods and no tuning can make the car run unpredictable AFRs and possibly hot EGTs. If it runs too rich fuel can get in the pre-cat that in the UP. This can get the pre-cat hot enough to fail. When it fails it shoots chunkys into the compressor side of the turbo.

Chances of the first option are 100%

Chances of the second option are probably less than 5%, depending how long you delay.

For reference, I ran around without tuning, but with the UP out for a month or so. The car ran fine.

Ruiner77
11-21-2005, 02:12 PM
well im going to play it safe i think. Ill probably install the other small bits and leave the up/dp for hopefully the week after the autox. Whats everyones schedules like the weekend of the 10-11th ? I really want to do ti before the holidays. Ill pick up the accessport as soon as i can though just to make sure its all in my possession.

one more thing, correct me if im wrong, i dont need to worry about tuning when i put in the thermostat and such do i? just mainly the up/dp. right? and then teh accessport will do just fine......

moxie
11-21-2005, 02:21 PM
Yes, I wouldnt worry about tuning until UP/DP

Thermostat should be fine.

Do you see anything wrong with this picture?

http://www.ruinersrants.com/images/exhaust.jpg

Drove back from Sedona yesterday and heard a loud THUNK under the car. We assumed it was a rock or some such thing since we drove home with no issues.

Then this morning at 5:30am when starting the car to leave i realized very quickly that i had a major exhaust leak. I checked all the stuff up top that i could but had to jack it up. It appears that i lost one of the 2 bolts holding the uppie onto the exhaust manifold. The gasket was just hanging by the second bolt... which incidentally was also VERY loose. So off to Lowes i went to replace the lost bolt. Got me a bolt that fit and slapped it on there with a lock washer and tightened everything up. Now all i have to do is figure out where the front 02 sensor bracket mounts to since its just hanging there. The sensor is in fine but the bracket on the wire isn't attached to anything at the moment. BLAH.

moxie
05-08-2006, 09:46 AM
O2 bracket goes on the coil plug for the rear most cylinder on the passenger side.

Its one of the first things you took off during the install.

While you are at it, I would check all the other bolts. :)

Ruiner77
05-08-2006, 09:49 AM
i checked just about every one in there that i could see. Even checked the engine mount nut i replaced as well. :P Hopefully my new heat shield will come in at surge so i can put the rest of it back on and be done with it.

moxie
05-08-2006, 09:50 AM
Yeah, those bolts and nuts that get hot like to losen ocassionally :)

I dont have lock washers and I heat cycle the crap out of the manifolds on the track with no problems.

Its just a good idea to check em once you remove em you make sure they stay tight.

Which reminds me i need to check mine

Well i finally got around to putting Bryan's/Erin's HKS CF catback on today. and boy is it louder than the STi one i had on there. I put it on with the Kartboy Hangers as well, and its quite dramatic how smooth the acceleration is now. I completely didn't expect that. Thanks again to Bryan for the part.

I've got to give my car the full bath this weekend, so ill have pics after that. Its gonna take me a while...lol.

ok... took the wagon on the highway last night, and i'm wondering if i have an exhaust leak. The new exhaust is damn near deafening when on the highway. I'm thinking of taking a vid of it so i can post the audio to get opinions. It sounds great under low load, and at idle. But once i got on the highway and was at a sustained speed, it felt like it was putting some solid pressure on my eardrums lol. Not sure exactly what to think. If that's how it is supposed to be, then i may just have to put the other one back on for daily use... uggg... but if its a leak, then i severely need to fix it before i get pulled over. Any suggestions?

It's tough to diagnose an exhuast leak via forums... one way I would check is to have the car in the air with the motor running, and run your hand around the joints to see if air is rushing out.

i need to get some ramps lol. i had a leak in my DP back when we put them in, and i could tell easily by sound. This one however only seems to sound that way when im giving it more gas. Ive got to get it up on ramps or something and have my wife give it gas while in neutral or something... i had the radio on on the way home last night and i was having trouble hearing it over the exhaust.

Welcome to the world of 3 inch, high flow exhausts on a wagon.

The rear area tends to create an echo chamber, and it also directs the sound right at your head.

The HKS is sorta loudish too...

I think its mostly likely not a leak, its just normal...
I'm used to it

3" high flow, on a wagon, is all the music i need..........i remember the hks being fairly loud. worth checking for leaks, but it's not gonna make that big of a difference in sound level. Remember, "if it's too loud..."

uggg that's what i was afraid of... well.... any recommendations then on a decent 3" that may be quieter but without the performance lag? it truly responds much better than before.... i don't want to go back to the STi exhaust, but i think its too loud for being our only family car right now.... grrrr....

you want 3", quiet, and an exhaust that doesn't leak? COBB. very nice sounding, and not too loud.

Why does it have to be quiet as a family car? Sheeet, when I have a family, the louder the exhaust the better so I don't have to listen to anybody!

LOL... id rather my boy not spend much of his time riding inside a pressure box. but on top of that, there are cops everywhere here and they are nuts about mods so i understand. that just makes it worse.

anyone interested in a used HKS CarbonTI catback? :(
