i have never autocrossed before, and really want to get into it, but i have been told by a lot of people that autocrossing in the heat just isn't worth it, is this true? I was thinking to myself, sure it would suck, but its valuable driving time you acquire for experience.
also, on the side, do a lot of people think it isn't worth it to autocross in the heat and there is little turn out at the hot events?
moxie
08-08-2005, 07:27 AM
I would say it's worth it.
The secret to AutoX in the summer is timing.
The events at CAC start early and end around 11am.
So you are gone before it gets horrible.
Just bring lots of water, and shade... Makes a world of difference.
It isn't always fun, but standing out in the sun for 45mins really isn't that bad, it's like free tanning.
i have never autocrossed before, and really want to get into it, but i have been told by a lot of people that autocrossing in the heat just isn't worth it,

Just got a notice that I have to re-register because I need to have a experianced driver ride with me... Any one willing to do that?
moxie
08-08-2005, 09:01 AM
Yeah, I can do that.
As long as I aint working or running during that time frame.
:)
Or do they mean you need a co-driver?
pickinicholas

That'd be cool... This is the email I got from him.
You did register twice, but our system only keeps the final entry for the registration.
However, you're going to have to register again. Because this is your first time, you can't run in A or B during the summer, and you'll have to have an experienced driver ride with you and sign you off to run by yourself.
If you haven't already, read the summer rules (!).
Who did the engine, Axis? What turbo? I'm just curious.

geren smith

I'll have to ask Kev if I qualify as an "Experienced Driver"
wgnths
08-08-2005, 09:33 AM
im sure if kev has time, he will ride with you!!! he gives valuable info indeed! ryan knows a thing or two as well.
as far as autox in the heat. this course is not much longer than a minute so its not bad on a car at all. water and shade are the key. and there is no better way to learn how to drive and what your car can do, then autox!!! i promise you've never driven your car to the limits you'll find on the course. :)
yepee
08-08-2005, 10:06 AM
I thought I knew what my car could do.... until Scott showed me what it really could do.... fun!
Ryan would count as an experienced driver. The main purpose for having a ridealong for novices is to ensure that you stay out of the dirt. Putting your tires in the dirt, may prematurely end your day :( (Safety reasons).
When you re-register...sign up for C or D. If you run A, nobody can legally ride with you because competitors can't ride along until they have done their competition runs.
Shade and water are a must. I'm going to wallymart to buy a checkerflag $12 HUGE umbrella. Umbrella = portable shade which is worth it's weight in gold.
Nick, I'll gladly ride along if I can. Either way we have enough people here to help break your cherry ;)
1bad_ej20
08-08-2005, 11:12 AM
Sorry to be repetitive, but as everyone has already said, it is WAY worth it. Seat time is one of the best ways to learn the feel of your car at the limit (and in general). Plus it so cheap. You can't beat it really.

Please, NO RAIN!!! I am still wet from yesterday. And I didnt even get my fried okra!!
If you were signed up for this week at CAC and cannot make this Sunday, then read on:
OK, some finalization:
1) As previously posted, please send all cancellations to 3frog@earthlink.net. Please try to do this by tomorrow. If you didn't physically show up and register yesterday, there's no need to cancel...
2) I will open registration sometime tomorrow evening/night. This will be for those who either didn't register last time or no-showed/late cancelled.
3) There won't be a limit to pre-registration entries, but the actual number of openings won't be known until we get in all the cancellations. I think we're at around 10 spots right now, and I will give some updates during the week so that those who are definitely in will know.
If you already registered and want to make changes to your entry, send me an email. Please don't ask for changes to your run group. We'll see who we can slide to their first choice, based on order of original registration (if you chose C/C/C and it was full, sorry, you got whatever was open). Most of the current openings are in D.

Send an email to our registrar 3frog@earthlink.net. His name is Geren...(pronounced with a G not J sound). Explain your situation to him and see what he can do. If you want to guarantee getting out early, you can also ask him if you can be assigned course setup or registration assitant. Both require waking up ass early, but will ensure you get out.
I-17 and happy valley eh? It sounds like you got that job at USAA, which is literally 2 minutes from my house. I wish I could get a job there. I'd save 26 hours a month commuting, that's like 13 days of my life freed up! FREEDOM!

Are you talking about Larry Petrucci and Dave Schotz? What are those guys running now-a-days?
Larry did a 52.089/988 in Geren's STi, which has a lot more power than my car (on Kumho V700). Dave Young was tops in SM (heck, tops overall with a 1000 pax) at 51.440, running Kumho V710s on his M3.
I'm running 225/45/17 Hoosier A3S04. My first autox in March '04 (well, first in about 20 years) I paxed 872 on street tires AS/NV1. Get as much seat time at as many autox as you can and you too will be beating Brady. 041.gif

Here's some (unintentional) drift for ya'... countersteering to correct.
First fun run, too low of tire pressure and too much throttle.
