it's finally september, and it's again time to start daydreaming about track days. i just wanted to post, so we're all thinking about having our cars in shape.

keep in mind that there are typically much fewer loaner helmets (compared to Solo2 events), so you might think about peeping sales at local moto shops. you need a helmet to ride along, too.

also, we do pre-event tech inspections here at SURGE for HPDE (street) cars. remember to bring your helmet to tech.

i'll probably be running the wagon for a bit, until the 240 is ready which will be..........umm? besides that, it needs to be registered/emissioned which it wont pass. i need to find another way to get it registered. :x and i have my helmet.

So whos going!!? if you havent done a track event, then you need to attend the saturday hpde class which is awesome because they teach you the course and some good basics. then you can have ride-a-long instruction. sunday you can run alone all day....myself, ryan and marion will be running sunday, for anyone that wants to join or come and watch/hang. there will be drifting going on as well. :) We want a good Surge presents at the tracks from here on out.

I was hoping for better, but it looks like we're getting a $20 Surge discount this time around. Hopefully, we can get a better price soon, especially for "Team" members.

Definitely try to come out to watch and just check it out, especially if you're thinking about running in the future. So far, they only have this weekend and December 3rd-4th scheduled. It's pretty much like an auto-x day , where it's free to watch (unlike mox's "dates").

As usual, they're running on both Saturday and Sunday. Drifting sessions are typically on Sunday, only. There will probably be more chance to ride along on Saturday, though.

wgnths

that works for me! and if anyone wants to kill some time, come down and at least watch/hang for a bit! especially with the large turnout we had at autox, it would be cool to see what running on the track is like.

Hrmmm....$20 for a 20 minute session! I think I'm going to have to free up my Saturday...hell yeah.

20 minutes is long enough to have some serious fun, yet short enough to not cook your brake fluid and tires!

4 hot lap sessions might be another story :)

motorbreath
09-23-2005, 10:35 AM
you can sit in the granstands, but everybody's always on the infield.

maybe the better answer is bring chairs, if you've got some. i'm going to try to set up the Surge Circus tent way on the west side of the infield, which ends up being sort of away from everybody. it's sub-optimal for bizzedness visibility, but it's ideal for seeing the track from the shade, which is why we're out there after all. however, the NASA folks might want to keep all of the vendors in one area.

to get to the track, it's I10 to Avondale Blvd, south on Avondale. the entrance to the track is (typically) the first entrance after the bridge. it's right after the bridge and kind of easy to miss. you'll sign something, drive through the tunnel and into the paddock.

be prepared, they charge a passenger fee, unlike Solo2, and you have to sign a waiver to get a wristband. it's normally $10, but (I think) we have a vendor deal where it's $1 for us.

Yeah, my instructor kicked major ASS!!!! Not only did he talk me through each run, he sat after the runs and went over the course one turn at a time, and then we went in his car on the HDPE3 run to demonstrate what he was talking about... He was VERY cool... the last session I hammered it and had the most fun and was the smoothest transitioning run I had. I had a blast and it was WELL worth the money!

Glad we were able to see Marion, Ryan, and Erin make the runs, and then catch some drifting before we had to leave. We were going to say goodbye but you guys werent at the tent when we were goign to go. I took some pictures with my digital cam.... i was goign to bring my good 35mm and lenses with me, but realized that the batteries were dead just when we were going to go. So these arent the best photos, but they turned out alright. There are a few of my boy and wife mixed in there too. I didnt get any of you Marion cus i didnt realize that the curve was open to spectate until your sister came over and told us... :D.

He is not a pro and we weren't racing for position or times, so why does it matter. He was bitching about us with more horsepower punching it in the straights... which was total BS... just because his car puts down like 90whp doesn't mean we have to hit the brakes to let him pass us... on the tool, he was excessively moronic. i heard nick and shawn (blue 05 STI) talking about it on saturday, but i actually witnessed his ass-hattery on Sunday morning while waiting for Ryan & Erin in the drivers' meeting.

to Nick, Erin, and Ryan, please just disregard this jerkoff. i feel bad that there was this kind of negativity on your first NASA experience. he was way, way out of line. for the record, i think he's semi-retarded (Gobbles! [/timmy]), and nobody (including myself and the instructors) wanted to deal with him at all. nobody has a right to say anything about speed in HPDE1&2.

i know you guys will all be back, but i hope it didn't turn off any other newcomers to returning. i know i would not have been happy with that sort of situation the first couple of times that i went out. i was scared sh!tless, by myself, and the slowest car out (by a far margin) for my first few events. i might not have returned if somebody gave me any grief.

That definitely would not apply to you Nick. You have way more power than I, but you let me pass you after turn 9. You waited a long ass time for me to get by, because I would exit that turn at like 35 mph way OUT of VTEC. Even that lancer would have pulled on me heh.

The lancer guy ran in my group, and I don't remember him saying much during the one de-briefing I attended. He was never on my butt trying to pass me ;)

As far as douchebigelow in the lancer ES, i confronted him in hopes of him saying something stupid. He complained about everyone, and offered his expertise as well  however, to end the day i made it a goal to find him on the track, ride his bumper and destroy him. Goal met. i rode him hard thru the second half of the infield and onto the oval, where he wouldnt give me the pass by until i started passing on my own. after the straight away, i never saw him again. :D f him. he was the only negative out there. otherwise, i learned lots had a blast and cant wait to do it again.

spec v would do great out there with its tq. you can power out of the corners and you have enough to get up to speed in the oval. ovals are scary because it wants to push u up towards the wall, then at the end you have to dive down and transition to flat. no biggie after a few sessions though.

moxie
09-26-2005, 11:52 AM
Yeah, the oval is a little scary, specially cause everyone tells you people die there.

That transition to flat didn't worry me too much, though my line through that decreasing corner just never went 100% right for me.

Spec V would have been fun. With the torque and LSD you could ripped it up.

My car is setup a little bit loose. The reason for my fear, is that my car tends to have more snap oversteer that you have to be VERY quick to counter. I'm only about 50% or so when it comes to being quick enough to catch. Not a high enough rate to charge the oval...YET 8)

I totally agree. George you woulda ripped it up :) In my s2k i was probably doing 6/10ths in the oval and 8/10ths in the infield. If I had my spec v, I would have been doing 8/10ths in the oval and 9/10ths in the infield ;)

Thanks to marion for getting us involved too. i wouldnt have had the balls or know-how without. :) after yesterday, eric and i were actually talking about a spec v track car. that would be fun. and watching the drifting was awesome, but for some reason im thinking i want to set the 240 up for grip events now. im really comfortable with my wrx setup right now, its very controllable with slight oversteer, good turn in and good damping. this will all change this week when i put the cuscos in and more aggressive camber.

I was gathering parts for a track car, I had the engine and I was about to get a hold of a tranny and I had a line on a cheap Sentra, I had a line for a roll cage... I almost had all of the pieces to the puzzle together. things changed and I got into autox... but I still want to hit the track

Spec V would have been fun. With the torque and LSD you could ripped it up.

I totally agree. George you woulda ripped it up :) In my s2k i was probably doing 6/10ths in the oval and 8/10ths in the infield. If I had my spec v, I would have been doing 8/10ths in the oval and 9/10ths in the infield ;)

My confidence with a spec V > My confidence in the S2k
ok, I need you guys to give me a run down, car prep etc

Did anybody experience brake fade? I thought I did on one turn...but it really wasn't a factor as I just did one session. I will definitely get motul before my next venture.

I'am concerned about the brake fluid too, stupid question, whats the easiest way of changing the fluid out? I wouldnt want to have brake problems on the track...... I like the way my fenders are shaped already :D

I felt like the brakes were getting warmer as the event wore on, but no real fade. I started braking earlier as the sessions went on, especially for turn 9

wondering about brake fade is like wondering if you're gay. you'll know. like you'll see a curve (on the track, or maybe a booby) and things just won't work out.

my Hawk HP+ pads continue to satisfy. i think brady said he cooked his, though.

pump, pump, bleed. pump, pump, bleed.

we've got some ATe Blue (coming in). it's dyed blue so you know when you get the new stuff to the caliper. then, you can switch back next time you bleed out old fluid, blue to "colorless" to blue, and so on.

you mean no one makes a power bleeder? Hmmmm The color change thing is a great idea!

oh yeah! i have one of those, too. i never think about using it, probably because i'm married. i did use it once, hoping to pull an evident air bubble out of a line. there's more cleanup, so i guess that's why i never use it.

I cooked the brakes in the Z in two laps on Saturday, but that was mostly fluid as it was boiling and spilling all over the place. It's original fluid with about 70 autocrosses and 3-4 track events. No problems in the 240SX on Sunday however.

It took me about 4-5 track days to get really confident on the oval, and that was in a slow car. Street tires are easier.. Marions car would hit tire squeal around 90-92 and just cruise, that's good enough for me. R Compounds make it hard because you don't have as much tire noise.. my 240SX was hitting around 105 and it didn't make a sound, scared me to death (thought the car had a mind of its own!).

Either way, thanks to Marion for letting me drive his car. Looking back on it I think was a big wussy in turns 2-4, and again in 5, but maybe another day. STis are pretty fast! Not as fast as a Z though. haha.

If you want to get good at track events, autocross as much as possible. This was my first event since May, with about 15 autocrosses in a row during the summer. At PIR everything felt like it was in slow motion.. another AutoXer was saying the same thing. Not to say it's still not difficult out there, but you literally have 2-3 times the margin of error in some places. You can be four feet off a corner and run the same lap time.. something you can't get away with in AutoX.

Marion got really fast in his last session.. I thought I heard him say something about nick's 400hp being "not a big deal anymore".

Next event is Arroyo Seco on October 22-23. I hope everyone goes to that, it'll be 5 times more fun than the PIR event!

Ouch! :( Haha... I really need to get some more confidance on the track... the last run I did like 1000X better than the first though.

Nick, it's ALL about seat time. You cannot get fast if you don't practice. If you become a track whore like Brady you will get better quickly.

Track Whore = going to as many autoxes and track events as possible while putting everything else on the weekends aside :)

Brady had some nice looking 4 wheel drifts going in the sti. :D I will say that the Brembo Gt bbk is by far the best money i've spent on the wagon...they were very strong all day. im starting to like the wagon so much that im loosing some interest in the 240. although watching brady's car perform changes that again. must get 240 back up and running.

Take the 240SX out on the track and I bet you'll forget you even own a Subaru! It's like driving an STi, only RWD.. trying to control all that power is a hell of a lot of fun.

Or just let me drive your 240 on the track.. keep the miles off mine. haha

actually i'd love for you to take it out and see what it can do, and what needs work. the car is really set up for drift but im thinking i'd rather grip with it now. not sure how the nismo 2 way will be? my biggest concern is making sure the car is reliable, like yours seems to be and others are not.

i've never had any mechnical issues with mine, other than it runs hot when it's hot outside. Anything over 90-95 degrees and the temp creeps up there.. but half the other cars out there were too. a lot of those 240s you see are all hacked together, hence the reason they break down all the time.

yeah i've noticed from the forum that they tend to use the cheapest means possible, which is fine but i want a solid, reliable car put together right with less worries.

I was the only blue Suby out there running as far as I know. There was one other that sat by the motorhome of that guy that owns the AMP track but I never saw it move.

You going to post those images up here by chance :?:

moxie, np on the tools that's why I brought them.. I grabed them and though... hmm you never know. lol

Hey I finally looked back through to the link of the images. Those are great, thanks! My wife's shots sucked.

Look at all that body roll, time to fork out some cash for springs, sway, and stifeners. Also since the event I have noticed some 'giant oil can' popping coming from the passenger rear on 5mph tight turns in parking lots. Struts I'm assuming but I need to get the car in the air to make sure nothing is loose. (check the lugs already just in case)

Thanks for the compliments Evil 8... that was so much fun it should be illegal!

Double check your rear swaybar to make sure it hasn't flipped. Although the STi struts are pretty notorious for popping over bumps (not too loud, more like a rattle... had it 2x on mine).
